Taipei offers fast transit, safe streets and a dense food scene, which suits remote workers who want a city base in East Asia. Guides online disagree about Taiwan’s nomad visa, so this one sticks to official pages and dates every figure.

Is Taipei a good base for remote work?
Taipei suits people who want a large, well-connected city with low reported crime and a metro system, and who can work in or near Asian time zones. It is less suited to those who want beach life, since the city is inland, or to anyone who struggles with heat and humidity in summer and rain at other times. These are our judgments from the sources below, not rankings. For the wider picture, see our best countries for digital nomads guide.
Visa options
Visa-free entry. The UK Foreign Office says UK passport holders can stay in Taiwan up to 90 days without a visa, extendable by a further 90 days, with a passport valid for at least six months. Check the rule for your own passport with Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs.
Digital Nomad Visitor Visa. Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs describes a nomad visa page (created 2 January 2025, updated 7 August 2026). As we read it:
- Only nationals of visa-exempt countries are eligible.
- Income of US$40,000 (age 30 and over) or US$20,000 (ages 20 to 29) in one of the last two years, or proof of another country’s nomad visa.
- Health and hospitalisation insurance for the whole stay.
- Proof you work remotely, a tax or salary certificate, and six months of bank statements averaging at least US$10,000.
- A passport valid for six months.
- If you are already in Taiwan, apply at least 10 working days before your stay expires, to the Bureau of Consular Affairs or one of its regional offices. A refused applicant must leave before their legal stay ends.
That page does not state how long the visa lasts, how extensions work, or the fee. It points to a separate fee document, and says the application fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. A July 2026 law-firm article says the visa is issued for six months and can be renewed three times, for a maximum of two years, but it does not cite an official source, so we have not verified it. Check the Bureau of Consular Affairs before you plan around a duration.

Cost of living
Numbeo, a crowdsourced site, listed these Taipei prices on 4 October 2026 (130 contributors, 1,068 entries). They are estimates, not official statistics.
| Item (monthly unless noted) | NT$ |
|---|---|
| Single person, excluding rent | 27,183 |
| 1-bedroom apartment, city centre | 32,250 |
| 1-bedroom apartment, outside centre | 15,385 |
| Public transport pass | 1,200 |
| Internet | 873 |
| Utilities | 2,761 |
| Gym membership | 1,311 |
| Inexpensive restaurant meal | 150 |
By our arithmetic, living costs plus an outside-centre rent come to about NT$42,600 a month, and about NT$59,400 with a central rent. Convert at the current exchange rate, and treat both as rough. Rent for short stays and furnished places is often higher than long-lease listings, so these numbers are a floor for planning rather than a quote. Numbeo does not say how its listings split between furnished and unfurnished flats.
Safety, weather and health
- Crime: the Foreign Office describes crime as extremely low.
- Typhoons: season runs May to November. Know your building’s shelter plan and check forecasts.
- Dengue: the Foreign Office notes rising cases in the south, including Kaohsiung and Tainan.
- Vaccines: the CDC (page reviewed 25 August 2026) lists hepatitis A and B, Japanese encephalitis for stays of a month or longer, and MMR. Ask a travel clinic.
- Traffic: scooters weave and vehicles may not stop at crossings. Drinking limits are far lower than in England. The Foreign Office says you need a 1949 international driving permit and your UK licence to drive.
- Medicines: cannabis oil is banned even if prescribed.
We did not verify official guidance on earthquakes or air quality for this guide, so check the Foreign Office page and Taiwan’s own agencies before you travel.
Healthcare and insurance
The Foreign Office says hospitals charge on a pay-as-you-use basis. Taiwan has a national health scheme that residents with a resident certificate can join after a waiting period, but we only saw older summaries and the scheme’s English site would not load, so we are not stating rules. Until you know your status, carry private cover; the nomad visa itself requires health and hospitalisation insurance for the whole stay. See choosing the right plan. Our healthcare abroad guide covers finding a doctor and bringing medicine, including Taiwan’s ban on cannabis oil.
Setting up your first month
| When | To do |
|---|---|
| Before you fly | Check passport validity (six months), insurance, vaccines, and the visa route you need |
| Week 1 | Get a SIM or eSIM (see eSIM vs local SIM), find a clinic, test your internet |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Decide on a longer rental, note visa deadlines, set up a coworking or cafe routine |
This is a planning outline, not an official process. For a full relocation timeline, see our moving abroad checklist for remote workers.
Tax and planning
Staying long can create tax residency somewhere. Read our tax residency guide, and compare other East Asian bases in Fukuoka for remote workers. We did not verify Taiwan’s own residency tax thresholds for this guide, so check them with the Ministry of Finance or a tax adviser before staying long.
FAQ
Is Taipei safe for remote workers?
The Foreign Office rates crime extremely low. Natural hazards such as typhoons and earthquakes are the bigger planning point.
Do I need the nomad visa?
Not for a short stay if your passport allows visa-free entry. The nomad visa matters if you want longer and meet the income and insurance tests.
How much does a month in Taipei cost?
Numbeo’s 4 October 2026 figures give about NT$42,600 with an outside-centre rent and about NT$59,400 with a central rent, by our arithmetic. Treat them as a rough floor.
When is typhoon season?
The Foreign Office gives May to November. Check forecasts and know your building’s plan.
Can I drive in Taiwan?
The Foreign Office says UK visitors need a 1949 international driving permit with their UK licence. Check the rule for your own licence.
