Digital nomad statistics for 2026 start with one reliable number: about 18.5 million American workers identified as digital nomads in 2025, roughly 12% of the US workforce, according to MBO Partners, which makes it the most consistent annual count available. Global estimates are much shakier, ranging from around 35 to 40 million up to as high as 80 million depending on who is counted. Most nomads are employees rather than freelancers, most are under 40, and the numbers you see in articles often come from self-selected surveys. This page collects the key figures, shows where each comes from, and explains why estimates disagree.

We update this page when new research is released, and we flag the source and sample for each figure so you can judge how far to trust it. It is general information, not financial, tax or legal advice.

How many digital nomads are there in the world?

For the United States, MBO Partners runs an annual survey of the American workforce. Its 2025 study put the number of digital nomads at 18.5 million, up 2.2% from 2024’s 18.1 million and about 153% above 2019. The slow recent growth suggests the lifestyle is normalizing rather than booming.

For the number of digital nomads in the world there is no census. Published estimates range from roughly 35 to 40 million to as high as 80 million, because sources disagree on what counts: people who work remotely while traveling for a few weeks a year, people who live abroad long term, or only those with no fixed home. Treat any global figure as a rough order of magnitude, and prefer the US figure when you need a number you can trace.

Employees outnumber freelancers

Before 2020 most nomads were independent workers. Today MBO’s data show about 11.2 million nomads with traditional jobs and 7.3 million independent workers. The employee group grew about 10% in 2025 while the independent group fell 7%, and almost three-quarters of that fall came from fewer baby boomer independents. For anyone planning the move, that is a reminder that a remote job is the most common route; see digital nomad jobs and freelancer vs remote worker.

The same research shows a visibility gap. About 13% of nomads with traditional jobs said their employer did not know they were nomadic, and 18% said their company had no nomad policy but their manager had given permission. Our guide to working remotely abroad for your employer explains why approval matters.

Digital nomad demographics: who are digital nomads?

  • Age. MBO’s 2025 data show Millennials at about 40% and Gen Z at about 35% of nomads. People aged 55 and over are a smaller share but still present, and a community survey by Nomad List reports an average age of about 37.
  • Gender. Men make up a larger share than women, about 56% to 43% in MBO’s 2025 US data. Nomad List’s community sample skews further, with about two-thirds men.
  • Work. Software, marketing, design, consulting and finance are common fields, which fits the remote-friendly roles in our jobs guide.
  • Tools. MBO-based summaries report that about nine in ten nomads use AI in their work, which would be well above the general workforce.

Digital nomad trends to watch in 2026

  • Growth is slowing. The US count rose just 2.2% in 2025 after a 153% rise since 2019, which points to a mature lifestyle rather than a boom.
  • The employee model is winning. Nomads with traditional jobs rose about 10% while independents fell 7%, so more people travel on an employer’s payroll than on freelance income.
  • A younger workforce is arriving. MBO notes that Gen Z is still aging into the workforce, and as they earn more, more of them are expected to become nomads.
  • Rules are catching up. More countries now run nomad visas, and enforcement against people working on tourist status is tightening in places, as we explain in digital nomad visas explained and Bali for digital nomads.

How much do digital nomads earn?

About four in five nomads in MBO’s 2025 research said they were very satisfied or satisfied with their income. Actual earnings depend heavily on the sample. Nomad List’s 2026 community survey, as reported by secondary summaries, shows a median income near $85,000 and a mean near $124,500, but that sample skews toward higher earners and people active on a nomad platform. A broader US sample such as MBO’s captures many part-time and lower-income workers too. When you see a single “average nomad income,” check who was surveyed.

Why the numbers disagree

ReasonWhat it does to the numbers
DefinitionCounting anyone who ever works while traveling gives far bigger totals than counting people who live abroad full time
SampleSurveys of a nomad website’s members skew younger, more male and higher earning than a national survey
MethodOnline panels, self-identification and extrapolation to a population all add error
RegionStrong US data exist; coverage of Europe, Asia and Latin America is thinner and less consistent
Recycled figuresMany articles repeat the same few sources, so a number appearing in many places is not independent confirmation

Where nomads go and what they need

Nomads cluster in places with affordable costs, visas, reliable internet and a community.

Rankings of top destinations differ by source, but the pattern is steady: places with workable visas, affordable costs, reliable internet and an established community. Our best countries guide compares the current options, and the city guides cover Chiang Mai, Lisbon, Medellín, Fukuoka and Bali. The number of countries with nomad visas is also hard to pin down, with counts from about 40 to 70 depending on how programs are defined, as we explain in digital nomad visas explained.

How to use these statistics

  • Cite the source, not the aggregator. Link to the original study and name the year and sample.
  • Prefer consistent series. A figure measured the same way each year, like MBO’s, tells you more about trends than one-off global claims.
  • Do not plan your finances on an average. Use pay data for your own occupation and location, and see the planning tools in how to travel full-time on a budget.
