Playa del Carmen is a Caribbean-coast town in Quintana Roo, Mexico, that many remote workers choose for its beach routine, its US-friendly time zone and its easy access to the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula. Its cost of living sits well above what many people expect for Mexico, and it asks for planning around hurricane season, health precautions and a clear understanding of what a tourist stay allows. This guide covers costs, visas, health, safety and community, with every figure dated and sourced.

This is general information, not legal, tax, medical or safety advice. Costs come from crowdsourced data and move with exchange rates, and rules change, so confirm details with official sources before you go.

Visas, entry and tax

Mexico has no dedicated digital nomad visa. UK government advice says British travellers do not need a visa for tourism, that the stamp you receive shows how many days you may stay, that 180 days is the maximum, and that tourists cannot do paid or voluntary work. It does not say whether remote work for a foreign employer counts, so ask the Mexican consulate in your country before you assume it does.

For longer stays, the Consulate of Mexico in Houston describes temporary residence for more than 180 days and up to four years. It says the visa allows work only if the salary is paid abroad, and that proof of economic solvency is required. The page, updated on 7 January 2026, links a PDF for the figures but does not state them, and we could not confirm the current income or savings thresholds. Check the consulate that will process your application. Our visas guide compares the main routes, and our tax guide explains why a visa does not decide where you owe tax.

What it costs

Numbeo is a crowdsourced database, so treat its numbers as a guide. The Playa del Carmen page was last updated on 20 October 2026 and drew on 45 contributors over the past 18 months. Numbeo notes that some data are estimated because the sample is small. Figures are in Mexican pesos (Mex$). Exchange rates move, so convert at the current rate.

ItemNumbeo estimate
One-bedroom apartment, city centreMex$18,108 a month (range Mex$9,838 to 25,060)
One-bedroom apartment, outside the centreMex$6,974 a month (range Mex$5,996 to 8,350)
Basic utilities, 85 square metre apartmentMex$1,546 a month (range Mex$928 to 3,188)
Broadband internet, 60 Mbps or fasterMex$522 a month (range Mex$400 to 600)
Monthly public transport passMex$500
Gym membershipMex$1,061 a month (range Mex$600 to 1,500)
Meal at an inexpensive restaurantMex$200 (range Mex$120 to 464)

Numbeo did not show a single-person monthly estimate for this city, so we cannot give a total. As our own arithmetic, rent plus utilities and internet comes to about Mex$9,042 a month outside the centre and about Mex$20,176 in the centre. That leaves out food, transport, insurance, coworking and travel. The centre figure has a very wide range, so check live listings. Our guide to travelling full-time on a budget explains how location and stay length move costs.

Health and insurance

The CDC’s Mexico page, last reviewed on 3 September 2026, recommends hepatitis A vaccination for unvaccinated travellers aged one year and over, typhoid vaccination for most travellers, and being up to date on routine vaccines including measles, mumps and rubella. It also lists a notice about cyclosporiasis cases in travellers returning from Cancún and the Riviera Maya, and describes dengue as spread by mosquito bites, with bite avoidance as the advice. Talk to a travel clinic or doctor about your own situation.

UK government advice says to drink only boiled or bottled water, to arrange insurance that covers local treatment and emergency evacuation, and to expect that some hospitals do not bill insurers directly, so you may have to pay up front and claim back. Foreign prescriptions must be translated into Spanish, and pharmacies may still refuse them. Our guides to health insurance and doctors, prescriptions and telehealth cover what to check.

Hurricane season and sea conditions

UK government advice says the hurricane season runs from June to November on the Atlantic coast, that storms can bring flooding, high winds and transport disruption, and that you should follow the US National Hurricane Center, local authorities and evacuation orders. The page does not name Quintana Roo, so check local guidance for your dates. It also says sea conditions can be unpredictable, some beaches are unpatrolled and you should follow the coastguard on swimming. We could not confirm from an official source how seaweed (sargassum) affects beaches through the year, so ask your host or check current local reports.

Safety

UK government advice names Playa del Carmen among the places where British travellers have been physically and sexually assaulted, in some cases involving hotel staff, taxi drivers or security staff. It advises being very cautious after dark, staying on well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones, and using “sitio” taxis, hotel-arranged taxis or authorised airport services. It says rival gangs have clashed in Cancun and that several shootings have affected tourists since 2021, without singling out Playa del Carmen for shootings. Taxi driver protests against ride-hailing can block roads without notice.

Our guide to digital nomad scams covers rental and ATM fraud, and eSIM vs local SIM helps with mobile data. Check your own government’s current advice before you go.

Community and workspaces

Playa del Carmen has a long-standing remote worker scene and several coworking spaces. We do not list venues because prices and opening hours change. Test a space with a short pass first, and read our guide to coworking for digital nomads for the questions to ask. For friendships, repeating activities such as language classes and sports groups work better than one-off events, as covered in our guides to loneliness and coliving.

Who Playa del Carmen suits, and who it does not

  • A good fit: people with North American clients who want a beach routine, a walkable base and an established community, and who plan around hurricane season.
  • A poorer fit: people on tight budgets who need a cheap base, travellers who want a quiet non-tourist town, and anyone who needs a clear legal route to work remotely without checking with a consulate first.

Test it for a month before you commit. For a comparison in the same country, see our Mexico City guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to live in Playa del Carmen?

Numbeo’s October 2026 data put a one-bedroom at about Mex$6,974 outside the centre and Mex$18,108 in the centre. Adding utilities and internet gives about Mex$9,042 and Mex$20,176. That is our arithmetic and excludes food, transport and insurance.

Can I work remotely in Mexico on a tourist visa?

UK government advice gives June to November for the Atlantic coast. Follow the US National Hurricane Center and local authorities, and check cancellation terms on rentals and flights.

Which vaccines should I think about?

The CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid vaccination for most travellers to Mexico and says to keep routine vaccines current. See a travel clinic at least eight weeks before you go, as UK advice suggests.

Is Playa del Carmen safe?

Many people live there without problems, but UK government advice names it among places where tourists have been assaulted and urges caution after dark. Use licensed taxis, stay in well-lit areas and check current advice.
